This Episode: My Vacation Reading Strategy
During this episode of Real Retail TV I’m going to share a reading strategy I developed over the last decade or so. This strategy helps me get the most out of my vacation while allowing for the inspiration that comes when I take time out of my business.
Please share any of your strategies to get the maximum blend of relaxation and inspiration on your vacation in the comments section below.
I am getting ready for the longest vacation I have ever taken in my adult life. Vacations are when I do the majority of my reading. I always seemed to fall asleep when trying to read for business or pleasure when not on vacation. There was always too much to be done. I have a stack of 12 books ready to go right now. Three are about a newly revisited hobby. One is a nee cooking magazine. One is a book about growing older by Mary Pipher and the second a classic by Brian Weiss. The rest are new releases by some of my favorite authors. The good news is there is an independent bookstore on the island so I can restock if I run out of reading. Thanks for the video Bob. It will help me get through the pilot in a thoughtful way.
You’re welcome Jean. Enjoy your retirement reading!!!
Bob
Sometimes to see if I’m ready to get “into” a book I go online and read the reviews. That will often inspire me…or occasionally will make me turn to something else:-)
That’s a wonderful idea Julie. Thanks for sharing!
have you thought of starting with the group a book club with some of your top business books?
I have thought about it. I’ve hesitated because I ‘m hesitant to add something else to my plate. Maybe you just moved the needle (:
Thanks for sharing your thoughts Angela!

BTW The next Mastermind is in October in Houston. We’d love to have you join us (:
This was awesome, thanks Bob! I approach reading very similarly. As a long Quick Start who loves to start things but struggles to finish them, I embrace a “pinball” approach – I’ll alternate reading several different types of books at the same time, and/or bounce between reading and several other activites. Every time my energy starts to flag, I’ll switch books/activities. I end up reading a lot more and finishing a lot more overall.
Debra,
I love the way you conceptualize it as a “pinball” approach. When I’m at home I’m a little more structured (2 books at a time, one fiction, one non-fiction) but on vacation I’m definitely a “pinballer.”
Thanks for your comment!

PS It was great to see you and your store on Saturday!
Because I am inundated with my business every day, when I go on vacation, I really don’t read business books. I tend to read books that have been written about the region in which I am vacationing. If I am the beach in Alabama, I pick up some wonderful southern fiction. If I am in Boston, I might pick a historical fiction. The point is that I relish the time to read and read and read.
Caroline,
Thanks for your comment and I wholeheartedly endorse your reading strategy because it clearly works for you!

Thanks for sharing your approach to vacation reading. I find that approach quite valuable and I like your selections! My approach is quite similar except that I also take breaks from the reading to go for a walk and think about what I read while checking out my vacation surroundings. I find that time away to digest the information — be it fiction or business — helps me figure out the plot to the fiction story, understand where our business can benefit from the business ideas, etc. Plus there is the added benefit of time alone to think, enjoy the local scenery, and get exercise — all regenerative for me.
I like it. A lot. Giving it all time to percolate is really wise.
Thanks for your comment Carroll!

Thanks, Bob and Susan! This was great; very helpful. I tend to feel guilty or less intelligent when I don’t want to finish a book! Good insight, as always!! And I’ll be looking for a few of those titles!

Candy, Thanks for your comment! A lot people feel this way. I did for a long time. But then I realized the book is there to give me value, if it’s not giving me enough value for my time, it’s time to quit it.

Hi Bob,
Could you please post your reading list from this video on the Whizbang Facebook page? I’d like to check out some of them.
