This Episode: How To Find And Keep A Great Retail Team
I don’t need to tell you that there is a labor shortage right now, so in this episode of Real Retail TV, we’re going to explore how to find and keep the best retail employees.
I hope you found this episode helpful. Of course, I always love to hear your thoughts and questions so please put them in the comments section down below.
Well I needed to hear that today – was contemplating giving bonuses to my core people that worked hard during the past 1.5 years of Covid crazy – I am going to do that today!
Need to retain the ones I have AND then work on adding more team members.
Totally agree that finding new employees from your customer base & friends & family is great place to start.
Thanks Bob!
I support most of your whole “spiel” re recruitment, and although I have not heard it before from you, most of it is what I have practiced for many years. I might add that the , staff we have at present have all been with us for 18 to 30 years, other than one, who is in her 6th year, and of those who left, mostly part-timers (20 + hours per week) and mostly students, they had all been here between 5 and 13 years.
SO WE MUST HAVE BEEN DOING SOMETHING RIGHT
What I tend to disagree with in your presentation, is that as a result of bad experiences in my early days (long ago ) I have made it a policy NEVER TO EMPLOY PEOPLE I KNOW OR HAVE SOCIAL RELATIONSHIPS WITH, and NEVER 2 MEMBERS OF THE SAME FAMILY Either of these scenarios can only lead to disaster Have a fall out with the one, and the other becomes bitter or sullen
Thank you for always providing concrete ways to help retailers like me with our day-to-day operations!
Thanks for your comment Caroline!

Agree totally with your policy NEVER TO EMPLOY PEOPLE I KNOW OR HAVE SOCIAL RELATIONSHIPS WITH, and NEVER 2 MEMBERS OF THE SAME FAMILY.
Hi Nancy,
Thanks for your comment. It’s appreciated.
Please see what I said to Mel….
Bob
Hi Mel,
Thanks for your comments. I, too, have had a couple of bad experiences working with people I know. However, the good experiences far outweighed the bad and I consider the strategy a sound one. Of course, this is the beauty of being an owner – you get to make the decision that fits you best. And clearly you’re doing something right!
