Just a thank you for your ‘Things to do now,’ at the beginning of the pandemic – your advice at the time was – keep cash – and that really kept us in good stead – thanks
You’re welcome Rosie!

Looking forward to post pandemic. One thing that the past year has shown many of us is the importance of having some money in the bank. There is a great book called Profit First by Mike Michalowicz . We had put this in place in late 2019 and it certainly made a difference.
Hi Janet! Yes, all of us certainly are looking forward to this damndemic being over!

So as most of you know I am opening a shop and I have so many great ideas that include a lot of marketing and signs but also include a lot of merchandise and I’m worried about doing too much too fast at the same time with the pandemic it’s kind of stupid not to do everything born event almost every weekend right? And can you help me out with anything that you have come up with that you can do when you’re on a budget like mine which is kind of 0?
Kimberly, Congratulations! The number one piece of advice (and, yes, I know it sounds self serving) is to invest in the Retail Mastery System (put it on the payment plan to conserve your cash) and DIG IN. It will save you from LOTS of expensive mistakes. Also join our facebook group WhizBang! Retailers. Good luck!

One comment about staffing. I’m not sure if it’s state or federal, but those on Unemployment Insurance can now work 4 hours a week with no reduction or claim against their benefit. So, in our case, if we don’t need everyone back all at once, it provides us with an opportunity for us to keep some employees “in the loop” by offering them a 4 hour shift each week. This will allow them to keep up with new product and training so when we DO need them, the “brain drain” from being off for so long will be reduced.
Great point Julie. Thanks for sharing!
Bob
Very much agree. Challenge (with all of that stimulus and supportive money in the economy now) is finding willing/wanting to work people, and I suspect this will continue for some time. So when you find them, the 4th element to me is make sure your work environment isn’t stuck in retro….appropriate benefits and pay, training, inclusive mindset are all builders of your business. Listen proactively to your staff, ESPECIALLY if you hire customers.
Great thought provoking piece Bob!
Agreed! Recruiting is a skill, and, to your point, an important skill given today’s market.
Thanks for your comment.
